What does 'living the dream' mean?

What does 'living the dream' mean?

I've noticed that sometimes when I ask a bartender, cashier, or barista how they're doing, they say 'living the dream'. I'm not sure if they're being sarcastic or not, and I want to understand the context.

They're being sarcastic. It's a way of saying they're just going through the motions of their job without really enjoying it.

The phrase has become a sort of unofficial anthem in customer service work. You'll hear it so frequently that it can lose its impact. Some people deliver it with a hint of sarcasm, while others sound completely detached. Occasionally, you'll encounter someone who says it with genuine enthusiasm, which can be a sign that they're either overcaffeinated or on the verge of burnout.

It's light-hearted sarcasm. They're okay, but not really thrilled about their job.

It's a sarcastic, but usually friendly reply. They're acknowledging that their job isn't perfect, but they're not complaining about it at the moment.

It's most likely sarcasm. They're saying they're okay, but they're not really passionate about their job. They're just getting by.

When someone says this phrase, it's a subtle way of expressing a lack of enthusiasm for their work. It's a phrase that's often used to convey a sense of duty rather than genuine excitement.

It's light-hearted sarcasm, and it's all about acknowledging that things aren't perfect, but not wanting to complain about it at the moment. It's like saying 'I'll be okay, but let's not talk about it right now.'
