I'm selling a vehicle on Autotrader and a potential buyer asked for a Carfax report, but then asked for a 'vin search' report that costs $77. He said Carfax doesn't reveal everything. Is this a scam?

This individual is attempting to deceive people by directing them to a fake website where they can enter their credit card information. The supposed 'Carfax' service is not legitimate, and victims will not only lose $77 but also risk having their credit card details compromised and potentially malware installed on their computer.

When purchasing a third-party vehicle report, it's essential to remember that this is the buyer's responsibility, not the seller's. The buyer must take necessary precautions to verify the report's authenticity.

I always include the latest Carfax report when selling my vehicles, which provides potential buyers with detailed information about the vehicle's history.

Scams targeting individuals on peer-to-peer selling platforms are common, often involving fake buyers who try to build trust by following a series of steps. This tactic increases the victim's confidence, making them more susceptible to the scam.
