This Week in Bali: Rain, Gado Gado, and AXEAN Festival

There is no doubt we need some rain soon. According to my sources, we are in the grips of an El Nino year, which means a dry season for us. While I don't mind a bit of dry weather after last year’s eternal wet season, the fires around town this week really emphasized the need for a downpour.

I was greatly saddened by the news of Gado Gado catching fire and burning down last Sunday night. This place had quite a history, from the resto club of the 80s and 90s, to a stylish fine-dining restaurant, and finally a popular 'Ultimo on the beach' style establishment. Pak Kadek’s son, Putu Wiranatha, informed me that they are doing all they can to get it back ASAP. The rebuilding is expected to start very soon.

Friday evening saw The Longest Table record attempt at Le Bleu Beachfront Restaurant. An enormous table of about 60 meters was set up to accommodate 120 people. The setting was incredible, with a full moon above and a four-course meal from the chefs of all the K Club restaurant venues. It was a truly romantic spot for a fancy dinner. And to answer Klaus Schmidt's question, I must say, I do need a girlfriend around for such moments!

AXEAN Festival was in town last weekend, held at Jimbaran Hub for the third time. This premier inter-regional music showcase and business conference featured 49 musical acts from Southeast Asia, South Korea, Japan, and France. The festival was a success, with a buzzing crowd of both locals and foreigners. From the cutting-edge performance of Singaporean outfit Sub:Shaman to the funked-out soulful sound of BRKFSTBLEND, there were plenty of highlights. Make sure you get along next year if you enjoy thought-provoking and exciting new bands and performers from around the region all under one roof.
