Oh, you've come to the right place. The energy here for wellness and movement is really special. It's actually what brought me from Spain and what keeps me here.
For yoga, I have to start with Yoga By the Way on 30th Ave. It's a beautiful space with wonderful teachers, classes in both English and Spanish. Drop-in is $200 MXN, unlimited monthly is $2,500 MXN. The community there is warm and welcoming, which sounds like exactly what you're looking for.
The Jungle Gym combines yoga with functional fitness, great vibe, very social atmosphere. Monthly packages from $1,800 MXN. Ah Maya Yoga is smaller and more intimate, focused on Hatha and Vinyasa. $150-200 MXN per class. It's a lovely space for going deeper into your practice.
For beach activities, there's beach volleyball groups near Mamitas Beach most mornings around 8-9 AM. Just show up and ask to join, everyone is friendly. Paddleboarding rentals are $200-300 MXN per hour along the beach, and a sunrise SUP session is genuinely one of the most peaceful experiences you can have here. Kite surfing schools at Paamul beach (20 minutes south) offer beginner courses from $3,000-5,000 MXN. And you can snorkel right from the beach near the ferry terminal.
But if connecting with people is your priority, start with Parkrun. It's a free 5K every Saturday morning at 7 AM in Parque La Ceiba. The community is huge and international, runners, walkers, everyone is welcome. Honestly it is the single best way to meet active, positive people in Playa. By the end of one Saturday morning, you'll have made real connections.
There are also running clubs that meet 2-3 times a week, check "PDC Runners" on Facebook. And if you're adventurous, getting PADI certified for diving is incredible here. The cenotes are world-class. Shops along 5th Ave offer certification from $300-500 USD.
And cenote swimming. It's the most beautiful workout in the world. Car Pool Cenote, Cenote Azul, and Cenote Cristalino are all within 15 minutes of Playa. $100-200 MXN entrance. Crystal clear water surrounded by jungle. It nourishes the soul as much as the body.
