I'm still sorting out the basics after moving to Halifax from Russia two months ago. I have furniture and items I couldn't sell and I'm looking for the best way to dispose of them. I've tried listing them on Marketplace but haven't had any luck.

I once had a massive garage sale in North St. where I left everything on the curb. Within hours, it was all gone. People love free stuff, and it's not uncommon to see entire households being picked over in a matter of minutes. I recall seeing a large, sturdy couch being taken away in just a few hours.

My neighbors were quick to claim my old couch before I even had a chance to put it out on the curb. They called dibs, and it was gone in no time.

Shipping can be convenient with u-boxes, but I'm not sure what the price is.

Curbside giveaways are a real thing. To avoid any issues, it's essential to be responsible for your items if they don't get taken. Starting early is key, and posting clear signs on your items can help attract potential buyers. For example, you can put a sign on a piece of furniture that says 'free, no bugs, no smoke' to deter people who might be looking for a bargain.

When putting out items for curbside giveaway, it's essential to place them in a visible location, away from the bins. This ensures that items that don't get taken by the public don't end up getting tossed in the trash. There's no guarantee how long or clean the items will be at collection time, so it's best to be proactive and put them out in a safe location.

Be cautious of scavengers who might come around and cut the cords off your electronics for the copper value. This can be frustrating and costly, so it's essential to keep a close eye on your items during the giveaway period.

When selling items on marketplace, a concise and well-written ad is crucial. It should include multiple clear pictures of the item, along with its dimensions for larger or more complex items. Specify that pickup is the only option, and mention that it's a moving sale to encourage buyers to check your other listings. To make your ad more discoverable, use relevant tags and consider renewing or reposting frequently if your items aren't selling. Additionally, reducing the price of unsold items can help attract more buyers.

In Halifax, the unofficial curbside giveaway period often takes place a few days before garbage collection. During this time, people tend to put out items they no longer need, and they often get taken within hours. The exact dates may vary, but it's generally a good idea to put out your items a few days before collection to increase their chances of being taken.
