I recently moved to NYC and am interested in modeling nude for a figure drawing class, but I have no prior experience and am on a student visa, so I'm not officially allowed to work.

Some queer nude drawing groups exist, but I don't know their specific names. You might want to search around and reach out to those groups directly to see if they're a good fit for you.

If you're not allowed to work, then university and academic model registries are out of the question, as they all require paperwork. You could try attending informal events like Dr. Sketchy's or casual drawing groups. If you're serious about life modeling, practicing is essential. Holding a pose for extended periods can be challenging, so it's helpful to study reference from classical works to reproduce those poses. To get a feel for it, try standing still for 30 minutes to an hour, using a timer and a mirror to work on your posture.

The LGBT+ Male Figurative Drawing Group meets weekly at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. They have a contact form, but their model policy isn't listed online.

Drink n Draw is a fun and respectful event that I've attended several times. You can find more information on their Instagram page.
