As a physician practicing here in Playa, I can tell you that healthcare is very accessible and the quality of private medicine is excellent.
The system works differently than in the US or Canada. There is no referral process for most private care. You can walk directly into a private clinic without an appointment for a general consultation, typically $500-800 MXN ($28-45 USD). With your Cigna Global policy, most private clinics will see you and provide a factura (official tax receipt) that you submit for reimbursement.
For hospitals, Hospiten on the highway has English-speaking staff and works with several international insurance providers for direct billing. Amerimed is another solid option with a 24-hour emergency department. Both have specialists on staff.
For routine stuff like a sore throat, a skin rash, a basic checkup, the consultorios attached to pharmacies like Similares and Farmacia del Ahorro are surprisingly capable. The consultations are only $40-60 MXN. The physicians there are licensed and qualified, though the visits are brief. I would say these are fine for minor issues.
Specialists here are abundant and very affordable compared to North American pricing. Dentists, dermatologists, gynecologists, many completed training in the United States and are fully bilingual.
A few practical notes: always ask the cost before any procedure. Get a factura for every visit if you plan to claim reimbursement. And bring your current prescription bottles or labels from home, they help any doctor here understand your medication history quickly. The Facebook group "Playa del Carmen Expat Health" maintains a pinned list of recommended doctors that is genuinely useful.
