Should I sue the MTA for an injury on a bus?
Recht & Finanzen 5 answers • Camille Weber
I was getting on an MTA bus in Queens and the driver accelerated suddenly, causing me to fall and injure my back. I've been to urgent care and they've prescribed medication, but I'm still in a lot of pain. I'm wondering if it's worth pursuing a lawsuit against the MTA.

It's generally a good idea to consult with a personal injury lawyer rather than seeking advice from random individuals. These lawyers often provide free initial consultations and can help you determine whether you have a valid claim. However, it's essential to act quickly, as personal injury claims against government entities typically have strict time limits, often requiring you to file within a matter of weeks or risk forfeiting your claim.

This is a widespread issue that poses a potential danger to passengers on the bus. The more severe the financial consequences for the bus company, the more likely it is that they will address this issue. The problem often arises when the bus driver starts moving before the last passenger has paid, putting those people at risk of injury, particularly if they are standing near the front of the bus where people with physical disabilities, age-related decline, or babies often sit.

Filing a complaint with the MTA is a reasonable first step. While the outcome of a lawsuit is uncertain, consulting with an injury lawyer can't hurt and may lead to a positive outcome. It's worth exploring your options, as you have nothing to lose but your time.

That driver's behavior was unacceptable. The bus driver is supposed to wait until passengers are clear of the white line before moving the bus. However, given the prevalence of fare evasion and overcrowding, it's unlikely that this rule is consistently enforced.

I appreciate the hard work of many MTA employees, but unfortunately, some of them display a lack of concern for their passengers' well-being. I recall an incident where an elderly woman with a cane was getting off the bus, but the driver closed the doors before she was clear, causing her to be thrown to the ground near the bus wheels. I had to run after her and shout at the driver to stop the bus before he nearly ran over her leg, which was a truly disturbing experience.
