Cost of Living in Da Nang: A 2026 Budget Breakdown for Expats

A comfortable expat budget in Da Nang is $800-1,200/month - rent $230-500 for furnished apartments near beach, electricity $33-70 (higher with AC), food $300+ monthly, local beer $0.45/can. Pho costs $3, banh mi $1.30, movie tickets $2.30-3.50. Da Nang is remarkably affordable if you embrace local options. Here's my detailed 2026 breakdown after tracking expenses for months.

Housing and Utilities

Your biggest expense will be rent. Furnished one-bedroom apartments or serviced rooms near the beach or city center run between $230 and $500 per month. I currently pay $230 for a serviced room that includes 24/7 front desk, cleaning twice weekly, and internet. It is a 90-second walk to the beach.

Utilities Breakdown

  • Electricity: $33-70 per month (averaged around $51). This goes up significantly in summer when you run AC constantly.
  • Water: Often included in serviced apartments. Budget around $30 if you are in a standalone unit.
  • Internet: Usually included in serviced places. Standalone service runs about $8 per month.

Food and Groceries

This is where Da Nang really shines. Eating well here costs remarkably little if you embrace local options.

Restaurant Meals

  • Local restaurants: $4-15 for a full meal with drinks (air-conditioned places cost more)
  • Street food favorites: Pho costs about $3, banh mi around $1.30, spring rolls $5, roast pork $8
  • Western food delivered: Fried chicken $5-7, pepperoni pizza $6
  • Steakhouse dinner: A 10.5oz ribeye with beers runs about $33

For a comfortable food budget, expect to spend $300 or more monthly. You can go lower if you cook at home and stick to local restaurants.

Drinks

  • Local beer: $0.45 per can
  • Imported beer: About double the local price
  • Coffee at a nice shop: $2
  • Street vendor coffee: Under $1

Entertainment and Going Out

  • Movie tickets: $2.30-3.50 regular, $4.70-6.25 for 3D or VIP seating
  • Beer garden drinks: $1 for local beer, $3 for mixed drinks
  • Cooking class: $21
  • Street food tour: $32
  • Ba Na Golden Bridge day trip: $26

If you are on a tight budget, $30-50 per month covers minimal entertainment.

Transportation

Getting around Da Nang is cheap and easy.

  • Motorbike rental: $40-55 per month or $4 per day
  • Grab car ride: Under $4 for most trips
  • Grab motorbike: $0.50-0.90 per ride

I typically spend about $15 per month on transportation, which covers a dozen taxi rides plus delivery fees.

Phone and Connectivity

  • SIM card: $2
  • Monthly data plan (8GB daily): $7.80

Internet and phone together cost under $16 per month if you are in a place where internet is not included.

Other Monthly Costs

  • Laundry service: $1-2 per kilogram (about $7 per month for three large loads)
  • Toiletries, bottled water, snacks: Around $50 per month
  • Initial apartment setup: Add $100 for your first month if starting fresh

Visa Expenses

Do not forget visa costs in your budget:

  • Single entry visa: $25
  • Multiple entry visa: $50
  • Visa run by bus (package deal): $123-160 total

If you factor in visa runs, add roughly $50-55 per month to your budget.

My Actual Monthly Budget

Here is what my expenses actually look like:

  • Rent: $230
  • Electricity: $51
  • Food: $300+
  • Entertainment: $50
  • Phone and Internet: $8
  • Transportation: $15
  • Miscellaneous: $50

Total: Around $700-750 before visa expenses

With visa runs factored in, expect $750-800 per month for a comfortable but modest lifestyle.

Can You Live Cheaper?

Yes, but it requires sacrifices. The budget above represents what I would call "tight but comfortable" living. You are not splurging, but you are not suffering either. An extra $100 per month makes a noticeable difference in quality of life.

Coming from Minneapolis

For perspective, my monthly expenses in Minneapolis were easily three to four times what I spend here. The cost of living difference is dramatic. What I spend on rent here would barely cover a week of groceries back home.

Da Nang offers an excellent quality of life for expats on a budget. The key is embracing local options and being smart about where you spend.

Thirty years of Minneapolis winters were enough. Retired from manufacturing, packed up, and landed in Da Nang. Best decision I ever made. Now it's beach sunrises, Vietnamese coffee, and figuring out healthcare as an expat retiree. Happy to share what I've learned.
