Is Playa del Carmen worth visiting?

I'm planning a 12-night trip to Mexico for the first time, traveling solo. I'll be staying in Playa del Carmen for 7 nights, Isla Mujeres for 3 nights, and Cancun for 2 nights. I don't know how to drive, so I'll be traveling without a car. I'm looking for a place with nice beaches, walkable streets, and some activities to do, but I don't want to spend too much money.

Playa del Carmen is a great place to spend time without a car because most everything is within walking distance.

As a local guide, I think a week in Playa del Carmen is a good amount of time to spend without a car. Staying in a central location allows you to walk to the beach, restaurants, and cafes. While some criticism of the town is valid, it doesn't tell the whole story. I've noticed that locals are working hard to maintain the beaches and welcome visitors. However, sargassum is a concern, and beach conditions can be unpredictable. If you're looking for a destination with minimal sargassum and superior beaches, you might want to consider Isla Mujeres. The island is very safe, and getting around is easy.
