Lights Out? Tips for Managing Rising Energy Costs in Santurce
The lights flicker in Santurce, signaling a new reality for expats and digital nomads who call this Puerto Rican neighborhood home. As of last Thursday, the cost of electricity has increased, jumping from 33.8 cents per kilowatt hour to 39.084 cents. This change applies to the months of October to December, right when the festive spirit is at its peak.

Frances Berríos Meléndez, president of the Colegio de Peritos Electricistas de Puerto Rico, advises a cultural shift. 'No utilización,' she says, meaning the simple act of turning off lights and unplugging appliances when not in use. She suggests that while it might seem drastic, it's a necessary adjustment to save money.
For those who can't bear the idea of a dark Christmas, Berríos Meléndez offers alternatives like 'nightlights' or solar-powered lights. These solutions might require some initial investment but could save between $25 to $30 monthly.
As a taco stand owner in Santurce, I can attest to the challenges of sudden rule changes. This increase in energy costs hits us hard, especially when we need to keep the lights on for customers and maintain our operations. The key is to adapt, not abandon, our beloved traditions.
