I've been noticing a lot of mushrooms when I go for a walk lately, and I'm wondering if it's related to the weather.

It's time for mushrooms to release their spores. Damp conditions are perfect for them to thrive.

Mushrooms prefer damp weather, but not so wet that it's raining all the time. Large water droplets hitting them make it easier for them to spread their spores. Additionally, low temperatures encourage fungi to produce fruiting bodies because they think it's going to be winter soon, although this depends on the species. Some mushrooms, like oysters and shiitake, require a 'cold shock' to fruit well in a greenhouse.

This year has been remarkable for spotting new species of mushrooms that I've never noticed before.
