My father is 83 and showing early stages of dementia. He's calling me at 7am, thinking it's 7pm, or vice versa. Forgetting things seconds after he told me, etc. I want to look into getting him a home, but things are extremely expensive and also complicated.

If you're looking for a nursing home, consider reaching out to your local Adult Protection agency. They often have a good understanding of the local facilities and can provide recommendations. It's also a good idea to ask about staffing ratios, as this can impact the quality of care residents receive. Good luck to you and your father, and I hope he has a peaceful and happy life.

If your father needs long-term care, you can explore the ALTCS program, which is a branch of AHCCCS. This program provides insurance to help cover placement costs, but the application process can take several months and involves both financial and medical requirements. If your father qualifies, it can be a significant benefit for your family. Alternatively, you might consider hiring a placement agent to help with the search process. They can provide valuable insights and assist with touring local facilities.

I recently went through the application process for my mother, who was a candidate for LTC assistance. The program has very strict standards, and my mother's medical history ultimately disqualified her. She had suffered from a botched back surgery and three strokes, which left her partially paralyzed on her right side and with aphasia. Despite being able to perform basic self-care tasks, such as showering and meal preparation, the case worker deemed her ineligible due to the perceived high level of care she would require.

My partner and I are also navigating this challenging situation with our parents. We've found that attending local events, such as conferences or summits, can be a great way to learn about available resources and connect with others who are going through similar experiences. If you're in the area, you might consider checking out the upcoming dementia summit in Tempe.
