Why do veggie slices in NYC have broccoli on them?

I've noticed that veggie slices in NYC often have broccoli on them, but in other places I've lived, like Connecticut, Boston, and South Florida, they usually just put onions, olives, peppers, etc. on veggie pizzas. Is there a reason for this?

I'm a big fan of putting broccoli on pizza because it adds a delicious flavor.

Broccoli adds a unique char and crunch to pizza, which sets it apart from other toppings, like limp peppers. New York pizza has a strong affinity for broccoli rabe, and it's possible that this preference has influenced the popularity of standard broccoli on slices over time. A plain cheese with broccoli is an underrated combination, in my opinion.

From a botanical standpoint, there's no such thing as a vegetable, which is an interesting fact.
