I've been exploring Koh Samui for the past few days and one thing that really shocked me is the amount of trash everywhere. I understand that a lot of the trash on beaches gets washed ashore, but why is there so much garbage in the ocean to begin with? You can't even take a boat to another island without constantly passing plastic bottles and bags floating around. And it's not just the ocean. Even on hiking trails up in the hills, there's trash almost everywhere you look. It's honestly heartbreaking because the island has such beautiful nature.

While the recent rain and flooding have certainly contributed to the trash on the beaches, this part of Asia has been used as a dumping ground for years. Corruption plays a significant role, but cultural elements also seem to be a factor. Some countries are actively phasing out single-use plastics, but I don't see much movement on this issue in Thailand or the region as a whole. The island's rapid development has outpaced its waste management capabilities, with the primary municipal waste incinerator being non-operational due to breakdowns, resulting in massive accumulations of garbage, estimated to be over 150,000 to 300,000 tons.

Every Thailand island has a secret location where trash is not contained properly or processed. During the rainy season, heavy rainfall washes rubbish into the sea, which is then dumped onto the beach. This issue is not unique to Koh Samui, as many islands in the region face similar problems with waste management.

Lack of education and care seem to be contributing factors to the trash problem. I've seen firsthand how a little education can go a long way. In my garden, I have a compost bin where I put plant trimmings like leaves and branches. My neighbors' gardener uses it too, but unfortunately, he's also been known to dispose of household trash, including styrofoam and plastic, on my property. I've had to remind him not to do that. On a more positive note, I've organized beach cleanups with local teenagers, and it's amazing to see how quickly they pick up twigs and leaves. However, it's also disappointing to see how some kids don't understand the difference between recyclables and non-recyclables.
