INMAYA Launches Poetry Contest for Indigenous Girls in Quintana Roo
Back in October 2026, the Instituto para el Desarrollo del Pueblo Maya y las Comunidades Indígenas (INMAYA) in Quintana Roo, Mexico, launched a poetry contest aimed at indigenous and afro-Mexican girls between the ages of 5 and 12. This initiative, part of the Day of the Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Girl, seeks to honor and preserve the cultural heritage of these communities through poetry.

The contest, which runs until November 6, 2026, invites participants to submit a one-minute video reciting a poem in their indigenous language. There are two categories: A for girls aged 5 to 9, and B for those aged 10 to 12. Winners in each category will receive monetary prizes: first place gets 6,000 pesos, second place gets 5,000, and third place gets 4,000.
For more details or to register, interested parties can contact the INMAYA team via WhatsApp at 983 212 7117, by phone at (983) 129 3242, extension 602, or email at concursoninaindigenainmaya@gmail.com.
As an expat living in Cancún, this news hits close to home. It's a wonderful initiative that not only highlights the importance of preserving indigenous languages and traditions but also offers young girls a platform to express themselves creatively.
Arrived in Cancún in 2017 from Italy. Still figuring things out, writing it down as it happens.
