I was at Tops supermarket using the self checkout and a woman with a little girl was waiting in line, despite another free counter being available. They picked up a handful of receipts from the bin I had just thrown mine into. I'm wondering if they're using them to return stuff or redeeming loyalty points.

That makes sense, given that the building has paid parking, and they could use the receipt to redeem parking fees.

It's not a significant loss if you discard a receipt, unless you've used it to claim business expenses.

I'm aware of two possible reasons for this behavior. Sometimes, receipts contain discount coupons, and occasionally, kids might pick them up for fun, as my niece often does.

If they follow you around and pick the same item you've purchased, they could potentially use your receipt to show proof of purchase.
