What is the fence height code in South Austin?

I'm considering building a fence in my South Austin neighborhood, but I want to make sure I comply with the city code. I've heard that fences over 7 feet tall require a special permit, but I'm not sure what the process is or how strict the city is about enforcing this rule.

I'm curious about the process for getting approval to install a fence that exceeds 7 feet in height. Can you walk me through the steps involved?

Don't you need permission from your neighbors before installing a fence that's over 7 feet tall? I think there's a certain percentage of the fence that needs to be a certain height, so you can have panels that stay 7 feet as long as the percentage is in compliance. For example, if the fence is 100 feet long, maybe 75% of it needs to be 6 feet or less.

Code enforcement is typically reactive, meaning they respond to complaints rather than proactively looking for violations. Did you receive a notice or are you trying to figure out what to do? If it's the latter, I would suggest talking to your immediate neighbors and making sure they're okay with the fence.
