Oh, you are going to love it here. Trust me on this.
Playa del Carmen is one of the most vegan-friendly cities I have found in all of Latin America. The yoga and wellness community here has created real demand, so restaurants have responded beautifully.
Bio Natural near the park on 30th is completely vegan, and the burgers and bowls are genuinely delicious, not just "good for vegan food." $100-150 MXN per dish. Green Kitchen does stunning plant-based bowls, smoothies, and desserts. The kind of food that makes you take a photo before you eat.
Ojo de Agua has clearly labeled vegan options: bowls, smoothies, full plates. La Senda is farm-to-table with vegan tasting menus that will make you emotional. It is pricier but worth it for a special night. And most of the Thai and Indian restaurants along 5th Ave have dedicated vegan sections.
Now, as a chef, what excites me most is the traditional Mexican food you can eat vegan. Tacos de nopales, which is cactus grilled with salsa verde, are extraordinary. Frijoles are usually vegan here if you ask (no manteca). Fresh guacamole, sopes de hongos with wild mushrooms, elotes without the mayo and cheese. The flavors in Mexican cuisine are so bold that you genuinely do not miss the meat.
At taco stands, say "sin carne, sin queso, sin crema" and most places will accommodate you happily.
For cooking at home, Chedraui and DAC have solid produce and some imported vegan products. But the real treasure is the Saturday organic market, the tianguis orgánico. Local farmers, incredible produce, the kind of tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes.
The only caution: street food is sometimes cooked in lard. Always ask "¿usan manteca?" before ordering. But honestly, you will eat magnificently here.
