What are alternative routes from St. Joe's to northbound SR 51?

We live in Cave Creek and have been going back & forth to St. Joe's (5th Ave & Thomas) and find that when heading north, the on ramp from Thomas onto the 51 can be rather more hectic than we're comfortable with. We're looking for alternative routes to get onto the 51 northbound from St. Joe's.

To avoid Indian School, I'd go up 3rd Avenue to Osborn, then head east on Osborn to 16th Street, where the traffic light cycles and traffic volume are better. From 16th, turn right onto Indian School and continue to the 51. I wouldn't extend the route up to Colter due to heavy traffic through Camelback.

You're suggesting that making a left turn from Thomas onto 3rd Avenue while heading east on Thomas is not a problem, but I'm not sure that's accurate.
