Will a Queens daycare/preschool be saved after 30 years?

Our children's program, Christ the King Community Daycare and Preschool, is located in Middle Village, Queens on the Christ the King High School campus. This week, families were informed that, after 30 years, the director intends to retire and close the daycare and preschool program effective July 1. Christ the King High School has since announced on Instagram that, following the director's decision, its Board began discussions with Middle Village Prep charter school regarding expansion into the space.

The Catholic Health education system is struggling due to low enrollment, which makes it difficult for them to sustain their operations financially. Despite being a trusted and beloved institution in the community, they can't rely on love to pay the bills. The recent announcement of a 2K pilot program may have been the final blow that led the director to close the daycare at the Bronx's 233rd Street location.

It's worth noting that the institution in question is not actually Catholic, despite its name. They also tend to have a waiting list, rather than empty seats.

That's a lot of families to leave in the lurch. The high school is likely seeing dollar signs with the charter expansion. It's worth reaching out to the city council member for that district, as they may be able to put pressure on the city or find emergency funding to help bridge the gap. Additionally, it's possible that a larger daycare network in Queens, like the one that absorbed the Forest Hills program a few years ago when a director retired, could take over the operation and keep most of the staff.

Local officials are aware of the situation and are involved, but ultimately, the decision to close the daycare is up to the private institution. It's worth noting that many RC-affiliated schools in the New York City and Brooklyn archdioceses are facing similar challenges, with declining enrollments and rising costs. This is also reflected in the struggles of local parishes, which are seeing low active numbers and difficulty contributing to the church. Furthermore, daycare centers are often struggling to attract and retain quality employees due to low wages.

It seems like the decision to close the daycare was made with the charter school's interests in mind, given the attractive offer they made for the rent.

A similar situation occurred about 20 years ago in Pittsburgh, PA, where the directors of a small private school announced closure suddenly at the end of the year. However, a group of core parents and teachers came together and opened a 'new' school in the same location, retaining the same vibe and staff. If you're considering a similar move, make sure to have the person currently in charge of the finances on board, as they'll be able to navigate the transition more smoothly.
