What's wrong with the Hot Chocolate Run in Chicago this year?

I've run the Hot Chocolate 5K and 8K in Chicago for the past 5 years, but this year the experience during the actual run felt much worse than before. The packet pickup was smooth, but once I started running, I noticed that the water tables were mostly empty, and there were only 3-4 water stations on the course with no electrolytes. I was lucky that the weather was fine, but I'd expect electrolytes on a run at this price. The first water station was understaffed, and runners had to detour to grab chocolate chips themselves. I also didn't see mile markers until around mile 5.

I was expecting some swag, but my first year participating was a disappointment. I only got a finisher medal, and the line for hot chocolate was so long that I gave up and left without it.

This year's finisher medal design was a bit different from last year's. Instead of having a unique medal for each distance, they gave everyone the same medal with a gap at the top, allowing them to swap out the necklace for different distances.

During the 15K, I encountered some issues with aid station signage. I missed a few stations because the signs weren't clear, and when I finally arrived, I didn't have time to plan which hand to use for the cup. While it wasn't a major problem, I think there should have been more aid tables, especially considering the large number of participants. Additionally, it would be helpful to establish some basic running etiquette for big events like this. I found it frustrating to navigate around walkers in the first mile, who were taking up a significant amount of space.

The hot chocolate run is probably the least serious timed run they do. It's a crowded and chaotic event, making it difficult to run for time. The course is a traveling route, and the event has become more corporate over the years. It's likely that they're cutting costs and trying to increase profits by attracting as many runners as possible.
