NYRR events and races worth it?
Fitness 4 answers • vanessa562vanessa562
I've been running in NYC for years and have been considering joining a NYRR event, but I'm not sure if it's worth the cost. I've heard they can be crowded and expensive, but I've also heard they're a great experience. Can anyone share their thoughts on whether NYRR events are worth it?

Ultimately, it's a personal choice without any context, making 'maybe' the only viable answer.

In my opinion, it's not worth it. Having lived and run in New York City for years, I've seen the prices of local races remain relatively reasonable. For instance, many races in the tristate area still charge $20 or less, making it more appealing to travel for a lower-cost event than to pay thousands of dollars for a crowded NYRR race.

While NYRR does have some of the more affordable races, especially those that offer race-day support, you would need to participate in around 50-60 of their events in a season to reach a total cost of thousands of dollars.

Some events, like the NYC Half, Bronx 10 mile, and Harlem 5K, are definitely worth participating in. However, there are also plenty of local running clubs that organize fun and unique races, such as the Cherry Tree 10 mile, which can be done as a 3-person relay, or the Alley Bowl, a 3-person relay where participants throw a football to each other.
