I'll be traveling to Laos in a few months and want to check out Nam Xay viewpoint. I plan to bring my Hokas on the trip but do I need actual hiking boots too? My hiking boots are Columbia Newton Ridge.

Regular shoes are perfectly suitable for this activity.

Hiking boots are unnecessary for this climb. Hoka shoes, with their grippy soles, should be more than capable of handling the terrain.

I wore trail runners on this hike and found them to be more than adequate. The numerous railings along the path provided ample support as I ascended. However, the rock scrambling to reach the viewing deck was a surprise.
People have attempted this in a wide range of footwear, from flip flops to bare feet. While it's not recommended, regular running shoes should be sufficient.

The climb was quite challenging, especially after a rainy morning that left the path muddy. It's essential to wear shoes with good grip to prevent slipping. There are only a few stairs at the beginning, and you can rent shoes or slippers from the lady at the entrance. Don't forget to bring water and take your time, as the climb can be quite strenuous.
