Is my private driver in Da Nang trying to scam me?

I hired a driver for a couple of days in Da Nang and he told us his wife had a stroke and he's the only breadwinner. He showed us photos of his kids and kept trying to upsell us or take us to random places we didn't ask to go to. He was nice and gave us bottles of water, but I'm not sure if I should believe him or if he's just trying to get a bigger tip.

Pay the agreed price. I find this behavior unprofessional, to say the least.

You're being taken advantage of, 100%. As someone who hires private drivers regularly, I can assure you that their job is to drive you from one place to another. If your driver takes you to random locations, it's likely a bribe. Be cautious of free water, as it might be a scam. In Vietnam, people are sometimes offered water that makes them pass out and wake up in a scam call center in Cambodia. This is a general warning, though. Your driver may not be involved in something this serious.

In Da Nang, I noticed that many taxi drivers tried to upsell me. They'd tell me it wasn't worth their while to take me to a place unless I also let them drive me back. This was annoying and unprofessional, but it's also a difficult living. You can always say no to these requests.
