I used to play at Third Coast Volleyball, a sand volleyball facility with regular pickups. It's still a great place to play, and I've seen a friend's fiancée play in leagues there. Wakefield Crowbar, a popular downtown bar, is also a good option.

Wakefield is actually located in the Garden Oaks/Oak Forest area, not downtown.
