Should I continue paying for an apartment I'm withdrawing from in Boquete?

I'm an immigration lawyer working in Boquete and I've been following the recent earthquakes in the area. I've already paid almost $2000 for an apartment in Colinas de Mallorca, but now I'm not sure if I should continue with the process or if it's just situational fear.

You're not going to get your money back, so it's a losing situation. It's like they say in Colombia, 'más vale un avión'.

Have you even asked or investigated what building codes the construction company followed, or if they met all the anti-seismic parameters and regulations? Those are the first questions that come to mind.

They're not going to tell you that they didn't follow the regulations...

If you're willing to lose $2000, just leave it, but if not, I'd say stick with what you've already done. I haven't seen any news about buildings collapsing, so just relax.

Personally, I think it's just temporary fear. Countries that are prone to earthquakes, like the US, have multiple buildings that withstand them. Look at Los Angeles or San Francisco. Of course, no one wants to think about their building collapsing, but we should assume that another earthquake will happen someday and be prepared, regardless of whether we live in a building or a house.
