Why are poppies rare in Montreal?

Why are poppies rare in Montreal?
Altro 6 answers • isabelle_nguy
I've noticed that there are very few poppies being worn in Montreal this year, even in areas where they used to be abundant. I've walked past more Halloween decorations still up than people with a poppy on them. Are the Legion boxes just harder to find now? Are people donating online and skipping the pin? Is it a Montreal thing, a Quebec thing, whatever it is it’s a damn shame. Not even Tim Hortons has them with donation boxes…

It's challenging to obtain a poppy in Montreal, and many people, including Quebecers and members of minority groups, may not be familiar with Canadian history or its significance.

Meanwhile there are so many Quebecois in the current military.

It's surprising, given Quebec's rich history of military contributions, that the poppy campaign doesn't seem to resonate as strongly here.

Fewer people carry cash to buy a poppy when they see the donation boxes, which often have a suggested donation amount of $2.

It's been a while since I've had any cash or change on me, which makes it difficult to donate to the poppy campaign.

The most recent conflict involving Canadian forces was the war in Afghanistan, which is generally viewed negatively. To find a more positive example, we'd have to look back to the Bosnian war, where Canadian peacekeepers played a significant role in maintaining peace, despite being hampered by the violent conflict and its impact on civilians.
